What is BOTOX?

As an active member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, seasoned dentist Dr. Michaela Tozzi has significant experience in administering BOTOX and other dermal products for cosmetic enhancement. Not only can BOTOX be used to address aesthetic concerns, but it can treat TMJ pain as well. BOTOX is a purified strain of type A botulinum toxin that temporarily blocks the movements of the underlying facial muscles. This is what makes it so versatile as it can create smoother, younger-looking skin and prevent chronic clenching of the jaw muscles. If you'd like to say goodbye to Crow's feet, unsightly smile lines, and chronic TMJ pain, call Michaela Tozzi, DMD near Las Vegas, NV today.

Who is a Candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX is great for patients who want to smooth the visible look of lines and wrinkles on their upper face without surgery. BOTOX is often thought of as a preventive treatment, even if you are younger — keep in mind how often you tend to make facial expressions. It is a great nonsurgical option if you are frustrated by forehead wrinkles or parallel lines between the brows. It is also a solution for TMJ pain and for those who suffer from nocturnal bruxism.

What to expect during BOTOX treatment

BOTOX treatments are done as an outpatient procedure at Michaela Tozzi, DMD in Henderson, NV. If it is your first time to visit our office for BOTOX, we commonly perform the injection on the same appointment as your initial consultation with Dr. Tozzi. You will be asked to make different facial expressions, such as squinting, frowning, and smiling, to allow us to determine where the injections are to be placed. If you are receiving BOTOX to ease TMJ pain or to prevent jaw clenching, Dr. Tozzi will perform a full dental assessment to pinpoint the best spots for injection.

Once the injection sites are determined, the skin will be prepared and BOTOX will be injected through a fine needle. A cool compress will then be applied to help reduce bruising, swelling, and discomfort. You can request a numbing cream to help make the procedure more comfortable, but it usually isn't unnecessary. BOTOX treatments typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, after which you may resume your usual activities with no required recovery period.

how long is recovery after BOTOX treatment?

Following the procedure, you are allowed to return to your typical activities, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least one day. You will be asked to sleep with your head propped up for the first night and to not touch your face, which may accidentally spread the BOTOX to other areas. The treated areas of your face may appear bruised, swollen, or red, but this will dissipate after a few days. In many cases, it often takes around one week before the full results of BOTOX can be seen. The results generally last 3 – 4 months. During your initial consultation, Dr. Tozzi can make a recommendation on how often you should return for touch-ups to maintain your results.

BOTOX FAQ

What should I avoid doing after getting BOTOX?
After receiving BOTOX treatments, Dr. Tozzi recommends that patients avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours. This precaution is to prevent the BOTOX from spreading to unintended muscles. It's also advised to avoid strenuous activities, excessive heat, and sun exposure immediately after treatment to minimize the risk of bruising and swelling. Dr. Tozzi will provide a comprehensive list of dos and don'ts to ensure your recovery is smooth and you achieve the best possible results.

Can BOTOX help with headaches associated with dental issues?
While Dr. Tozzi doesn't specifically treat migraines with BOTOX, it's known that TMJ disorders can contribute to headache pain. BOTOX injections used to address TMJ pain can potentially provide relief from headaches that stem from TMJ dysfunction or bruxism (teeth grinding). During your consultation, Dr. Tozzi can assess your symptoms and may recommend BOTOX as part of your treatment plan if she believes it could help alleviate your headache pain associated with dental issues.

Will BOTOX treatments affect my facial expressions or dental function?
Dr. Tozzi is highly skilled in administering BOTOX treatments to ensure that patients maintain a natural and expressive appearance. The goal of BOTOX, especially when treating TMJ pain, is to provide relief without impacting your ability to make facial expressions or affect dental function. Dr. Tozzi uses precise techniques to target only the muscles that require treatment, ensuring that your facial expressions remain unaffected and your smile is as vibrant as ever.

How many BOTOX units/injections will I need?
The number of BOTOX injections needed will vary based on individual needs and the severity of your facial lines, wrinkles, and/or TMJ pain. Dr. Tozzi can determine the appropriate quantity of BOTOX units according to your desired treatment outcomes and the area or symptom(s) you want to treat. To prolong your results, we may suggest receiving BOTOX injections every few months at Michaela Tozzi, DMD.

How long does it take for BOTOX to relieve TMJ pain/temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD)?

However, pain may begin to dissipate in the jaw and head within a day or two. Most patients begin to see signs of improvement within a few days to a week and then in the days following subsequent injection sessions.
